Audible's Returnship Program
Launches New Roles
Audible's "Next Chapter" Returnship Program has several exciting new opportunities for professionals ready to re-enter the workforce after a caregiving break. This paid, full-time internship program, launched in October 2020, is designed for experienced professionals with at least 5 years of experience who have been out of the paid workforce for a year or more due to caregiving responsibilities.
"This is a super exciting initiative and one that is close to my heart," says Anne Erni, Audible's Chief People Officer. "We appreciate the skills you can offer, the perspective you provide, and the contributions you will make."
The program's success is exemplified by professionals like Nandhini Gunalan, who joined Audible after a 13-year career break. Now, four years later, Nandhini leads a team of 10 Quality Assurance Engineers and co-leads the Audible Women in Tech Commerce committee. "I didn't feel like I was getting back to work after a decade, nor did the team treat me that way," Nandhini reflects on her initial experience.
Since its inception, the Next Chapter Returnship program has welcomed six cohorts, continually expanding its reach. Originally focused on tech roles, the program now extends into UX, marketing and recruiting, with these new positions being launched in the upcoming cohort.
Tim Martin, Audible's Chief Technology Officer, emphasizes the program's importance: "By offering caregivers the ability to onramp back into the workforce, we are recruiting and developing highly motivated talent while also continuing our commitment to creating an inclusive team."
The program's comprehensive support system includes dedicated mentors, a thorough onboarding process, and engagement with employee-led impact groups like Women in Tech. These groups offer sessions on crucial topics such as imposter syndrome, confidence, and work-life balance.
Nandhini's journey with Audible began in February 2021 as part of the inaugural returnship group. Despite holding a master's degree in computer science and Amazon Web Services certifications, she had faced challenges re-entering the workforce due to her career gap. "Though many companies talk about inclusion and diversity," Nandhini notes, "if there is a gap, they won't even get you to the interview stage."
Audible's program changed that narrative. From day one, returnship participants are fully integrated into the company culture. They receive support from new managers, group mentors, HR representatives, and team "buddies." Senior leaders, including the Head of Information Security & Security Engineering and the Chief Technology Officer, personally engage with each cohort.
The success of the program is evident not just in individual stories like Nandhini's, but in the strong bonds formed within each cohort. Participants often create their own support networks, sharing advice and experiences through channels like Slack.
For Nandhini, the program offered more than just a return to work; it provided an opportunity to pursue her passions while honoring her choice to prioritize family. "Now I can do much more, what I really wanted to do. And I was there when they needed me," she reflects.
As Audible continues to expand its Next Chapter Returnship Program, it reaffirms its commitment to inclusive hiring practices that recognize the value of diverse experiences and career paths.
