Audible Sound Bites with Pan Pan

Pan Pan is a senior director on a team focusing on fraud prevention and technology resilience. Working from our Newark headquarters, she helps protect the integrity of Audible’s service, allowing us to provide a safe and reliable experience for customers. She also participates in Audible’s employee-led Impact Group, Women in Tech (WiT), helping to mentor girls and women in our community and empower them to pursue tech careers.

What is life like at the hub you are aligned to?

My colleagues and I have enjoyed various activities that Audible organizes or sponsors in our vibrant Newark neighborhood. Last fall, our team spent an afternoon harvesting and seeding the vegetables at Hawthorne Avenue Farm, which is operated by the Greater Newark Conservancy. We learned about the meaningful work that the farm is doing to educate the community about nutrition and to provide residents with access to fresh produce—and everyone had fun!

Can you share an an example of a time when you received customer feedback that was meaningful to you?

When I interview candidates, I usually ask them what makes them interested in this role. I am glad to hear that many of our candidates are Audible listeners, and some have been Audible customers for more than a decade. They love our products and are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the brand. I find this inspiring, and it makes me proud to be working at Audible.

Can you share a bit about your career journey at Audible?

I joined Audible in 2022 to lead our technology resilience program, and in 2023 my role expanded to include leading a fraud defense program. Taking on additional responsibilities is always challenging, especially when you are still relatively new to the company. However, my manager and team have been incredibly supportive, which has helped me quickly pivot and lead my team to achieve meaningful results.

Other than the people, what do you love most about the culture here?

I love that we truly embrace our People Principles, especially “Activate Caring.” Our leaders care deeply about the well-being of our employees, and we are dedicated to helping the communities in the places where we operate.

My team and my colleagues practice “Activate Caring” every day! For example, my team starts our weekly meetings by celebrating wins and cheering for each other's great work. We also set aside dedicated time to discuss what I can do as a manager to help my team grow and remove roadblocks for them. I feel comfortable reaching out to my peers and colleagues across the company when needed, knowing they will support me.

Can you describe any community impact activities you’ve participated in? What do those experiences bring to you, personally?

In 2023 and 2024, I worked as a math tutor at North Star Academy here in Newark, spending time each week with high school students on algebra and geometry concepts. It's an engaging experience where we tackle challenging problems together. The excitement when students work through difficult concepts is contagious, and these sessions have become a highlight in my week - a chance to connect with bright young minds and share our enthusiasm for mathematics.

What’s one quality people interested in working on your team need to be successful here?

Tenacity: the ability to persistently investigate complex issues, uncover hidden patterns and see cases through to their conclusion is critical. Fraud can be multifaceted and require digging deep to identify the full scope. Team members need the tenacity to not give up, even when the path forward is not immediately clear.

What advice would you have for a candidate considering Audible?

Ask the right questions! Think about what's important for you and use the opportunity to assess if the position is right for you. Ask the questions that will help you collect data points and determine if this is a job that you are excited about.

What makes you choose to work at Audible, what made you want to stay?

I was introduced to Audible by a dear friend whom I trust, and I felt connected with the people I met during my hiring process. I choose to stay because my work allows me to have autonomy, mastery and purpose.

Have you ever participated in an Impact Group or community impact program? If so what kind of effect did it have on you and your work?

I am an active member of our Women in Tech (WiT) Impact Group and have organized multiple events, including a technology treasure hunt at our Innovation Cathedral, a coding hour, and AI-inspired storytelling for “Take Your Kids to Work Day.” Getting involved in those activities outside of my day-to-day work responsibilities has been a rewarding experience. I feel more connected with my colleagues across the company and the community we are all part of.

What was your first Audible listen? What inspired you to check it out?

Crying in H Mart, by Michelle Zauner. It's narrated by the author, and as an immigrant myself who grew up in a family that loves food, there are many things that I can relate to.

Lightning Round!

Favorite genre? Thrillers, but I also love a really good memoir.

Listening from a speaker or headphones? Speaker.

Favorite activity while listening? Driving.

Morning person or night owl? Night owl.

Favorite snack? Fresh fruits, especially tropical fruits.

What are you listening to?

When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi. It’s beautifully written by a brilliant young neurosurgeon about the last chapter of his life. It's heartbreaking, but powerful and inspiring at the same time. It brings tears to your eyes, but surprisingly, doesn't make you sad. It reminds us to do what we can, with what we have, while we can.
